Hey Chris and Dave,
Great podcast this week, loved that you covered the draft and moves that the pack might make, top work. Its been a while, but its good to be back in the packers therapy mix.
I have a few points, scenarios to give you regarding the draft and free agency.
First, Darren Sharper. I just do not see why they wouldn’t try and get him. He gives you a legitimate starter and veteran leadership.
He wouldnt break the bank, and they would actually have some depth at safety.
Next is in regards to the draft. Offensive Tackle. Defensive Back. Offenisve Tackle. Defensive Back. How hard is it? I dont care if Thompson decides to move up or down based on value, thats up to him, but i dont think i could live if he once again takes a WR and Linebacker. Im not saying that a LB would be the worst option, but it certainly wouldnt be the best.
I hear that Darren Sproles is a restricted free agent, any thoughts? He would be a good complement to grant, and he is, the prototypical receiving back. imagine if rodgers had, Jennings, Driver, Finley, Jones and Sproles. Thats scary.
Anyways, thank you so much for the wonderful podcasts as always, and an extra thank you for covering the draft.
Your buddy down under,
Jack.
So what is it with you and guys named Darren?
First Sharper: He would be an excellent veteran addition, but he would be an expensive, short-term solution. Plus, he just had surgery (reportedly minor) on his knee. Makes me wonder how much he has left in the tank. Still, he would be a nice complement to Collins, sort of like when they brought in Eugene Robinson back in the day. If GB is, indeed, “going for it,” acquiring Sharper would be a good move.
I think Sproles would be exactly the sort of third down back/KO returner GB needs. However, my understanding is that he was given the highest tender by SD, meaning the comp for signing him is a first and third round pick. That means a trade is in order to drive the price down. I would support making a deal, but not for a high pick this season. GB needs to find an OT and a CB, so they will need their early picks in ’10. Perhaps a series of future picks? Not sure SD would go for that, nor am I certain who on the GB roster they would want. However, if the price is right, Sproles would certainly fill huge need in GB.
We will be back with a pre-draft show and, after the draft, Chad will be back with us. Thanks, Jack, for your continuing support and for taking the time to be in touch with your thoughts.
Chris,
Your very welcome my friend, i have missed commenting on the podcast, but have of course listened to every one released.
A quick note on Sproles, he did originally only have a 2nd round tender, but the chargers have “changed” their mind.
I guess the draft will be the only option, and as the league is continuing to devalue RB’s, there is a chance that they could pick up a similar kind of talent in the 3rd to 4th round. Maybe a Dexter McCluster? His stock fell a bit because of a 4.5-6 40 at the combine, he could be a bargain. Seriously, i hate how now a player like Hayden from Florida has fallen in the boards because his 40 wasnt fast enough. I sincerly hope Hayden falls to Green Bay, just a prediction on my part, he could be available at 15ish, they should move up.
Anyway thanks as always,
your man from the south land,
Jack.
P.S. Yes i know its lame, im just joking around.
Hi Chris and Dave,
First time I have taken the time to comment on the podcast and let me tell you I really enjoy it. I’m a huge Packers fan based in London and as you might have guessed the radio waves aren’t exactly gushing with NFL news so finding Packers Therapy has been an absolute God send.
I think this is a really interesting draft for the Packers for a number of reasons none more so then the fact Tim Tebow is now expected to sneak into the 1st round and if someone wants him badly enough the Packers might do quite well out of a team trading up.
Secondly I really think it is getting near impossible to predict what position group Ted will target (even more so then usual Chris!). Besides QB, TE and RB I think any other position is a real possibility. Which is great because I’d hate us picking a CB or OT just because it is a need with most of the worthy first round talent OTs long gone by the Packers pick.
In fact it would suprise me if we picked up more bodies for the interior of the line like Maurkice Pouncey (C) or Mike Iupati (G)…if this happened I could see Chris taking the time to drive up from St Louis and doing the flaming brown paper bag trick on Ted Thompson’s front door step!
Ed
Thanks for your comment, Ed. From what I understand — and I am no Chad Reuter when it comes to the draft — there is enough talent in the pool that GB going for need and selecting an OT or CB early probably won’t be a heinous compromise on their part. That said, we all know that TT is a steely-eyed assassin, so he will no doubt have something surprising for us come draft week.
Thanks for downloading us in London. Glad we can be your Packers fix from 4000 miles away.
