Farewell, Brian Brohm

by Bart Winkler | November 20th, 2009

PC_new_logoLess than two months after he was drafted, I went out to an establishment in my old hometown of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. To my amazement, I saw a pretty young woman rocking a Brian Brohm jersey. I would have talked to her, but I knew she had to be delusional. So far, with Brohm failing to not only beat Matt Flynn on the depth chart but also failing to make the 53-man roster, I was right in my assessment. But, lo and behold, Brohm’s been given a second chance.

Like they did with Craig Nall so many years ago, the Bills are giving a former Packers quarterback another chance. Brohm has been scooped off the Packers practice squad and signed by the Bills, although I doubt I’ll be betting my friend Shep that Brohm will be winning an NFL MVP anytime soon (yes, I actually lost $100 on Craig Nall that way). While I haven’t seen anything from Brohm that makes me think he’ll even be a start in this league, the Bills did pretty well with claiming Jamon Meredith off our practice squad, so you never know.

The Packers made a play to keep Ted Thompson’s second round pick of a year ago, cutting Jake Allen to make a roster spot for him. But Brohm decided that if he was going to have any success in the NFL, it wasn’t going to be in Green Bay, and he signed a two-year deal with Buffalo.

So with the Packers back down to two quarterbacks, they’ve plucked former Central Washington quarterback Mike Reilly from wherever the hell he was working and signed him to the practice. He did receive some buzz before the draft, but was ultimately cut by Pittsburgh before the start of this season. I don’t expect anything out of this guy other than to keep the practice squad warm until we sign a backup veteran next offseason.

  1. Green Bay isn’t signing a backup veteran QB next off season, any more than they did in ’08 or ’09, Bart. Just isn’t going to happen.

  2. Bart, you must have talked to that lady, becasue you are sounding delusional….”until we sign a backup veteran next offseason”…Ted sign a veteran…I don’t think so.

  3. Brian Brohm is the biggest blck mark on TT yet – no injury excuse, no need excuse, Henner was sitting there, his coaches and scouts were telling him Henne and he picked Brohm. What did he see?! The guy never looked or acted like a QB one day while in GB. But Teddy saw something in him that he liked enough to ignore his desparate need at OT and with a bright young talent emerging at QB (AR) he invested a 2nd round pick in a QB that never was close to NFL grade. Makes you question Teddy’s right to be GB’s GM.

  4. At first glance, I thought it was a solid pick. He was gonna be a more then capable backup to a very good QB. But then one day I met him in person and I was completely underwhelmed. He was very smarmy and way too overconfident. The conversation we were having must have been in some foreign language because he was about as engaging as a bassett hound. Not for someone touted to be one of the better QBs to come out of college and come from some royal stock of genetics. He is not a big guy at all as I had mistook him for the punter(kept that one to myself). It took me a bit to realize who he was. The one thing, that to this day I still can’t believe is he had very small hands. You can’t come close to being an nfl QB if you have the hands of a 12 year old.

  5. Lars nailed it on the head. TT hasn’t brought in a backup veteran qb yet, so why would he start now? In some respects, TT is a huge gambler and high risk taker.
