Title: The OFFICIAL PAckers v Lions Game Day Thread
Post by: ricky on December 28, 2017, 04:31:52 AM
So, where do you stand? On Team Win, or Team Tank? It would be good for the Packers to pull out a win, end up with an 8-8 record, and go into the offseason with at least a bit of success to bolster them for next year. (This is the "rosy, green/gold goggles" view, I guess).  A loss means picking much higher in each round of the draft, which would mean the Packers could possibly maneuver in the draft, target players in areas of need, and bolster the team on both sides of the ball. So, practically, its better for the Packers to lose. But to root for a loss? Very, very difficult, if not impossible. And it will be very strange to not see our guys trotting out onto the field next week. Its been nearly a decade since they missed the playoffs, an amazing feat. This is a hiccup, though, not a trend. And this offseason is going to be very, very interesting. So, fasten your seatbelts, because we're in for a bumpy ride.

The two point plan.

1) Put in the backups and rookies, most especially those who have a decent chance of a larger role next year. Whitehead, J.Jones, Biegel, M.Adams, McCray, Patrick, John, M.Clark, Fackrell, Pipkins, M.Evans
2) Then coach to win, never hint to the players that they should 'not try  too hard'.

That is probably the best way to both give experience and lose without trying to lose. If they win, young guys feel good, well played, and move on.

I agree with this thought process. I'm guessing Stafford plays for Detroit so they probably torch our defense early and often. Let the young kids play and play hard. The outcome will be a loss IMO and that is OK too.

Moving up a few more spots in the draft potentially is very crucial IMO. There are about 10 really good players and 3-4 QB's who will go in top 15 players. Moving down to 18-19 which is possible is a hard pill to swallow.

I truly have mixed feelings about this game.  We always want our Packers to win but seeing this is a lost season anyway losing a meaningless game like this one could net us a higher draft pick.  If reports are true about Capers leaving Ted could draft a real difference maker on D - an EDGE guy perhaps? - and a new DC could turn this defense around.  Having a good defense with #12 running the show on the other side of the ball could be a real blast for us Packers fans!    :D

Just find a way to win the game, close 2017 out on a high note. Drafting a couple of spots higher doesn't mean they will get a better player or even a different player. Always win!

Packers are two drops away from being up 14-0. Instead it's 3-0 because Jamaal Williams' drop leads to an interception, and Jeff Janis can't come up with one off his hands.

Who screwed up on that screen, Davis or Janis? Davis never moved off the line of scrimmage to block. Janis moved a couple steps downfield, which seemed odd on a screen. McCarthy showed irritation while watching the replay on the big screen. The sideline shot of Jordy and Adams showed a lot of discussion and Jordy with a roll of the eyes.

Hawkins just has no ball awareness at all. You have to anticipate when the ball is coming. It's such a short timing route that you should have your head turned over your shoulder or at least try to rip the ball out of the receiver's hands.

Davis does need to get his guys out of there on "dangerous" punts like that. I don't know, maybe that wasn't possible in this exact scenario but he didn't appear to make any gesture to get anyone out of there. He went to field the punt. Guys wave guys out on those short angled punts for a reason. This seemed like one of those, to me anyways.

It still.may have been Davis fault. There should be a fire call of some sort that warns players in the area to vacate because the ball is coming and they may get hit with it. So Davis may not have called it, or called it too late. No telling, but it's a possibility.

He's (Davis) is not terrible. He has some fielding issues, but the reward could be huge if he continues to get better. He's in the top five in punt return yardage and you can see his speed. He's not a natural returner and he's still learning the position.
by Tom Silverstein 2:15 PM

Donatello Brown was in his way and the ball went off of him. It was't Davis' fault on that on at all. Silverstein is wrong on this one.

He wasnt discussing that play which he blamed on Brown entirely. He was responding to another regards Davis overall.

It still.may have been Davis fault. There should be a fire call of some sort that warns players in the area to vacate because the ball is coming and they may get hit with it. So Davis may not have called it, or called it too late. No telling, but it's a possibility.

Capers should've been fired years ago. MM just has been too loyal to his players and coaches. TT has not been able to get impact players on defense. TT thinks that rookie free agents and low level draft picks can turn into impact players. The odds are against that as the draft picks get lower.

Need the Redskins, Cardinals and Dolphins to win. We could slip by the Dolphins with the same record. It will be close. The Raiders win would give them the same record, but they'd pick in front of us due to strength of schedule.

Nagler (regards Hundley) - He was certainly not drafted to "be the next Rodgers." He was drafted to be a backup, most likely with the hopes of flipping him for a draft pick down the road, but that has obviously all come crashing down.

Ezekiel Ansah's season stat line is going to look a lot better than how he played this year. Picked up his second sack of the day -- No. 11 of the year. Eight of those, though, have come in three games. With 43 tackles, he's also closing in on his best tackling year ever, when he had 49 in 2014.

Damn, the Giants might beat the Redskins. That could drop them to the #3 pick, although the Colts are currently up.

Clinton-Dix needs to go.   Safeties who are slow and refuse to hit are worthless.  Players who mail it in as obviously as he has are losers.

Last hurrah for Caldwell. Sticking it to the Packers for previous losses.

I guess, seems Bush to me ! But this is what you get when you don't field a competitive team!

(7:23) (Shotgun) A.Abdullah right end for 7 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

(7:23) (Shotgun) A.Abdullah right end for 7 yards, TOUCHDOWN. (Pass formation) TWO-POINT CONVERSION ATTEMPT. G.Tate pass to M.Stafford is complete. ATTEMPT SUCCEEDS.

DET 35
GB 11

Two point conversion?

Golden Tate was lined up out wide. Staffford started walking to the line and calling an audible or making line shifts. A direct snap to the RB who took the ball right and handed to Tate who was running a reverse. Tate hits a wide open Stafford in the left flat. That play will definitely make it to YouTube and any future trick play highlight videos.

A bush league two point score.

Whatever, it's a meaningless game and Caldwell's final hurrah. Let the players have some fun.

That has to be Hundley's final pass in a Packers uniform.

Man, hundley just can't get out of his own way. He is the biggest waste of three years ! Can't understand the failure to recognize the lack of talent on this guy!

Some Hundley stats. Essentially 10 full games played for.

14 turnovers
29 sacks
197 yards lost
7 losses
2 shutouts
184 yards per game
under 70 QB rating

9 passing TD's and 2 rushing TD's
wins over Chicago, Tampa Bay, and Cleveland. Two of those were OT games.
lots of gum chewed

I guess that's it. Can't see how McCarthy can honestly go into 2018 thinking Hundley is an option at backup QB. Disappointing he couldn't play better.

On Abdullah's TD -- Clinton-Dix did a nice pretend-to-tackle. You gotta be a great athlete to get that close (brushing jerseys) without actually hitting the guy.

This game's not helped that one bit.

This entire season is on everyone in this organization. TT for not giving MM the talent to compete, MM for thinking that Hundley can be a NFL QB, MM for thinking that Capers is going to do better, after years of being bad. Capers for just doing the same old crap, year after year!

At least Mays didn't fumble any of his touches this game. I guess that's an improvement.

Finishes his rookie campaign with 1 yard of offense on 7 touches, along with 2 fumbles.

All of this.  Jim Caldwell has to be wondering what it would take to get a gig in GB.  Hrs had plenty of success as a head coach and he's about to get canned when he completely outcoached the guy on the other side today.

I wouldn't shed a tear if Ted retired, and the new GM started all over with a new coaching staff.
