Title: Top 3 QBs in Packer History
Post by: BIG LEGEND on January 27, 2018, 05:14:09 PM
Criteria is the following

The performance and success based upon the offensive structure and expectations of the team for that position during the era played

Factor in the physical tools such as mobility, arm strength etc. and intangibles such as leadership, game management, performance under pressure etc.

Well, the Packers history goes from 1919 to today.

During that time the top 3 quarterbacks were

1 Tom Brady
2 Joe Montana
3 Johnny Unitas

Special mention
Sid Luckman
Payton Manning

I'd say "imho," except these are, in fact, the top three, in order.

Here's how I would rank them in a timeline...
Otto Graham
Johnny Unitas
Joe Namath
Joe Montana
Dan Marino
Tom Brady
Payton Manning
Bret Favre
Aaron Rodgers
Drew Brees
Taking the top three from that is hard but IMHO:

1) OTTO GRAHAM
2) JOHNNY UNITAS
3) TOM BRADY

Am I missing something? Isn't this asking top 3 Packers QBs? Starr, Favre, Rodgers are the obvious answers

Brady is more of a system QB where you could plug Favre or any QB like him in any system and win. Now Brady wouldn't.

Yes, in Packer history.

I thought it could offer the chance for some good debate. The reason that I posted it was after thinking about Tom Brady and AR. I do believe that Brady is the greatest QB in NFL history, but AR is without question the much more talented QB. I would venture to guess that if a GM could pick between starting their team with a 25 year old Brady or a 25 year old AR, and I am being conservative here, as many would select AR as would select Brady.

So much of greatness is dependent upon situation as timing as it is pure talent, or at least I believe that to be the case

Brady has 42 4th qtr comebacks and another 7 overtime wins.
Rodgers has 10 4th qtr comebacks and 1 overtime win.

Rodgers wins his games early or struggles. With Brady it's not over till the clock runs down.

Brady has always played with a defense that was rated pretty high. Rodgers has had to play many years with a defense that ranks in the bottom third. That has to be considered when talking 4th qtr. comebacks and OT wins. Seattle and AZ losses in the playoffs are an example. Neither time did Rodgers even get the ball.

In order:

Bart Starr - 5 Titles says it all.
Aaron Rodgers - Still more history to write
Brett Favre - Briefly held nearly every record imaginable

Honorable mention:
Arnie Herber - Stepped in and kept a dynasty rolling. Was Don Hutson's QB.
Tobin Rote - Under appreciated player.
Quote
During the span of his Green Bay career, Rote ranked third in the NFL in passing touchdowns, trailing only Bobby Layne and Norm Van Brocklin. He also ranked first in the league in rushing yards by a quarterback and second in touchdowns.

Somewhere in there after the Big 3 have to be Cecil Isbell, Lynn Dickey, and Don Majkowski.

I'll always have a special place for Majkowski and the cardiac pack attack, if for no other reason than his likeness adorned my seventh grade locker door.

And how do you backup those choices for Top 3 QBs in Packer History?

Campbell and Tagge were the highest drafted QBs in Packer history (1960+) at picks 6 and 11.
I meant to say Don Horn, a 1st round pick, and not Scottie Hunter, forgive me if my memory of their careers is a bit blurry.

As far as Tolzien goes, well it was so quiet in here, I just wanted to see if I could hear my echo!!

Please forgive me, but the true top three is  Campbell, Tagge & Rodgers with Horn on the outside looking in.

Didn't know the question was about the highest drafted QB's....thought this was about the top 3 QB's in Packer history by performance.
