Title: 2018 Practice Squad
Post by: Donzo on September 02, 2018, 09:04:24 AM
I was told Donnerson and Davis were still in Green bay this morning, that sounds like  they're PS bound.

#Packers are placing OL Adam Pankey on the practice squad, a source told The Athletic. He's a versatile guard/tackle the team hopes to develop.

Packers are placing the two drafted rookies they released yesterday on their practice squad, per sources. They're looking for long-term development from DL James Looney (7th round) and OLB Kendall Donnerson (7th round).

#Packers are signing C Austin Davis to their practice squad. Keeps a true backup center in their system. Could elevate him to active roster if anything happens to starter Corey Linsley.

Good call Donzo, both are on the PS.

Glad to see Donnerson, Looney and Pankey.   The rest...meh.    There have to be better players out there than Martini.  Like to see 3 or 4 receivers on the PS...you know...for depth.

That's 6 so far:

 1. Looney
 2. Donnerson
 3. Pankey
 4. Davis
 5. Martini
 6. Lancaster

I'm thinking a RB, FB and a couple OLB's would be good to finish out the PS.

RT, my cousin saw them as breakfast this morning... The funny thing is, it wasn't Davis with Donnerson, it was Lancaster- lol.

Other teams signing Packers cuts:

– Colts sign LB Ahmad Thomas to practice squad (Tom Silverstein)

– Saints sign OLB Vince Biegel to practice squad (Herbie Teope)

I just shot through twitterverse and nothing new- interesting.

TT always liked to sign his own to the original PS... I'm thinking Gute is gonna bring in a few guys from other teams. They would have to for OLB's.

From the Packer website:

The Green Bay Packers signed the following players to the practice squad: RB Joel Bouagnon, C Austin Davis, LB Kendall Donnerson, FB Joe Kerridge, DL Tyler Lancaster, DL James Looney, LB Greer Martini and G/T Adam Pankey. The transactions were announced Sunday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

All eight of the signees to the practice squad were with the Packers during the 2018 preseason.

I’m puzzled by the fullback situation. RIP and Kerridge both cut, then Kerridge, who was injured almost the entire training camp is back for his 2nd (or is it 3rd?) time around on the PS. I guess the advantage is that they don’t, at present, have to use a roster spot for a fullback.

As for Bouagnon, I have no clue what the Packers see in him to warrant a spot even on the PS.

Packers aren't normally fast to announce anything.  So curious to have apparently announced 8, and to have left two spots hanging.....

That's 8 so far:

 1. Looney DL
 2. Donnerson OLB
 3. Pankey OT/OG
 4. Davis OC
 5. Martini ILB
 6. Lancaster NT
 7. Kerridge FB
 8. Bouagnon RB

Gute referenced 2 OLB's on the PS (6 OLBs on the 63- 53 active roster & 10 man PS)... Well, Donnerson is 1 , no one has listed the other OLB or the other PS player.

Yeah, I noticed that too, and wondered.  He just got it wrong?  Or, one of the 9th/10th spots is going to be filled with an OLB, but that guy needed to fly in and hasn't been able to sign and formalize yet?  Or perhaps thinking of Looney as an edge rusher and as a functional OLB option?

Packers fillout their PS with CB Tony Brown and S Marwin Evans.

Gute said they had two OLB on the PS.  I'd wondered if they were adding some OLB guy and needed to formalize before announcing.  But now that PS is filled, he was evidently referring to Looney.

Tony Brown has some really intriguing physical traits.  Not sure he'll ever develop into an effective CB  but could develop into a core STer.   He was a player I was hoping they'd take a late round flyer on in the draft.

This just in. Packers have signed Darious Jackson off Dallas PS:

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2018/09/03/packers-signing-rb-darius-jackson-off-cowboys-practice-squad/ (https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2018/09/03/packers-signing-rb-darius-jackson-off-cowboys-practice-squad/)

From PackersWire:

”Jackson will replace waived cornerback Herb Waters on the Packers’ roster.”

and

"In Jackson, the Packers are getting an elite athlete who has never carried the football in a regular season game.

Coming out of Eastern Michigan, the 6-0, 220-pound Jackson ran the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds, did 20 reps on the bench press, hit 41″ in the vertical leap and 11-1 in the broad jump and completed the 3-cone drill in 6.87 seconds."

Very surprised, some of the JS rumors seemed to suggest Ripkowski, and I thought some of Gute's press-conference comments also hinted that fullback was "fluid".

Maybe they still will, and Light or Crawford will get waived.

But would have thought MM might prefer a system-familiar blitz-blocker first (Rip), over a developmental prospect.  So color me surprised.

May well be that Rip was a possibility; but after scouting and reviewing, maybe they liked the possibilities with Jackson and thought his possible upside was high enough that it was worth taking a shot?  Good candidate to get waived in two weeks for Jones anyway, but gives them a couple of weeks to take a look and see what they think.

Rip may come after week 1 when vet salaries are no longer guaranteed?   Perhaps a consideration at this point for other vet guys that could help like John Simon

FWIW If we were poaching RB talent I wish it would have been De'Angelo Henderson from the Jets PS.  He's small but dynamic.    Had a very nice preseason with the Broncos.

Read his draft profile straight line guy can't flip his hips.  Lack of fluidity is a death sentence if trying to play corner.  Didn't like what I read.  Good against the run and special teams gunner.  Fast is fine but you have to be able to move laterally.  Hope the scouts got him wrong.  We'll see.  I liked Waters surprised he didn't get back to the PS.
