Title: The OFFICIAL Falcons v Packers Game Day Thread
Post by: ricky on December 06, 2018, 05:46:47 AM
A new era begins Sunday. And a lot of questions will be asked, and hopefully answered. Will the Packers offense be more effective? Will the team respond positively to the change? Will the Packers "pack in" the season by benching Rodgers if the game gets out of hand? Will there be tryouts of newer guys, or will the team actually try to win against the faltering/disappointing/predictably underperforming Falcons? a winnin short, will Sunday be the beginning of the end, or the start of a winning streak the team can build on for next year?

It's not over. The Packers are still mathematically alive. This is a must win game, have to win out from here. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...  The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!

Packers vs. Falcons:
Regular season, all-time: 15-14
All-time, Postseason: 2-2
All-time, in Green Bay: 7-4

Maybe Tramon Williams will return a pick 6 off of Ryan just for oldtime sakes.

I must say you really called it concerning the Falcons a few seasons ago after their Super Bowl collapse. They never recovered.

Isn't their collapse due to the loss of Shanahan?
Matty Ice has been an illusion most of his career, except for the Shanahan years.

The Falcons have two basic problems.

They do not stuff the run on defense.

The  offensive line cannot make holes for their running backs.

Therefore, teams can just play the pass on them on defense, and run the ball down their throats on offense.

It's been a very strange year with lots of good teams having bad years. ATL still has a good offense, pretty much the same players that have torched us for a few years now. Need to see what kind of answer Pettine has for that. Granted, the team is pretty banged up and he will need help from the offense. So need to keep those things in consideration.

"Most of the time, in situations like this, you’ll see players play their ass off," a longtime NFL agent told http://ESPN.com . "They want to show everyone, ‘Hey, we weren’t the problem.’"

Went back and looked at the results of games first after a coach was fired in-season and it is common that that teams win. Even when they are heavy underdogs. The one that stands out to me is the Chiefs with Romeo Crennel replacing Todd Haley and knocking off the then undefeated Packers. I do expect to see the Packers play with the urgency we all wish they would of played with last weekend.

I don't see this ending well for GB.

The Falcons have played in cold weather at GB before, and have played well.

Would I like to see the Packers play well & win? Of course.

I just don't see GB ending the downward spiral this week.

If ever there was a game in which this team would come out with an inspired effort it would be today.  I think we will see a fast start and then as usual, a hang on at the end.  I am saying a 28-24 Packer win with a late game defensive stand.

The following players have been declared inactive and will not play in Sunday's game between the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons:
Green Bay Packers
8 QB Tim Boyle
21 CB Natrell Jamerson
65 G Lane Taylor
74 T/G Byron Bell
75 T Bryan Bulaga
91 LB Kendall Donnerson
99 DL James Looney

3 of the starting 5 OL is inactive today. Should be interesting, we will see about that depth that soo many complain about.

That first catch was clearly incomplete, and the fact they reviewed it and upheld it is absolutely egregious. Their should be replacement crews so when they refs are that bad, they can be replaced.

That's what we need to keep seeing. As far as officiating, Gooddell needs to totally revamp the entire system and not let it depend on human error. Cameras aren't a new invention, need to give those refs some help. Multi-billion dollar franchises and careers affected.

Davante Adam's > Julio Jones.

Simply because Adam's catches the ball, Julio is gifted yards. This isnt the only time Julio has been gifted catches from zebras. Its happened a few times in his career.

I want to like Josh Jones, but he continually screws up coverage. Like leaving his guy running free to the flat, when it was clearly his guy. How much is him being held back for so long, or how much is him not being a good player?

Really curious with Jones not getting a look so far.  Wonder if the lack of offensive line production is the reason.  Tough hard nosed runner as opposed to the cut back style of Jones.  Sure that question will be asked.

Whatever though, not a fan of throwing it all over the field against a team that hasn't stopped the run all year.  Sounds like AR has changed a lot of calls at the line.

Who was that on that last punt who was down in the middle of the Falcons while the ball was rolling? He eventually stepped on the ball. Plays was barely blown dead before he did
Why was that guy anywhere near a damn live ball on a punt return? Why can't they fricken coach anybody to do common sense stuff! That's ridiculous! Special teams is the easiest part of the game! Especially return! Just stay away from the damn ball once it's on the ground!!!!

Now with Jones in, I wonder if the reason for his early absence was some type of discipline thing.  Maybe late for a meeting or something.  That would be a great way for an interim coach to make a statement to the team.

The #Falcons brought pressure again on third down and got to Rodgers. The refs missed an obvious facemask call on Aaron Rodgers there, IMO. Packer faithful saw it and were not happy. Regardless, the Packers go up on a 50-yd FG by Crosby.

Aaron Rodgers will need three more pass attempts without an interception to tie Tom Brady's NFL-record streak of 358 straight passes without one. He's 13-of-19 for 116 yards with a TD as the Packers lead the Falcons 20-7 at halftime.

3rd and one, scramble and look for the big play, take a sack.

We're gonna get a new coach. Will get be better than McCarthy? Unlikely, McCarthy was a pretty good coach who could not reign in his QB. And now we're seeing the result of Aaron with no constraints.

Mahomes has thrown more TDS than Rodgers and Brady put together.

After nearly throwing that pick 6, Rodgers seemed very gun shy on that drive. Took two sacks and scrambled twice. A couple quick flats were the only thing he threw all drive. He seems like the kind of guy that is highly aware of & cares about the record for consecutive passes without a pick. If he breaks the record, I hope it takes a weight off the shoulders and frees him up.

That's been a problem for years. Comfortable with a lead. I remember when they blew a huge lead to the colts. This game should be iced with that last fumble but the offense should stay aggressive. That will tell us about philbins style.

That's the ball game.

They went super conservative. That's not ok. Have to stay on the pedal! This team oozes disaster. Dont let it creep up on you.

They give up points. It garbage time, but that feeds into the culture of this defense. They need to play like the game is on the line all of the time

Well, it was nice to see them put up points and have fun out there. Things could have went bad if ATL hung on to those picks. Defense played extremely well against a good offense for 3 quarters. Felt like Graham left a couple big catches on the field. Good win, time to stomp the Bears and make a statement.

Anyone still interested in tanking the rest of the season to get a higher pick? Or should the team continue to play to win? Bring on the Bears!

They dont control their own destiny, nor will they beat any playoff team on the field. So yes, increase draftvstick.

It's always a good week to beat the Bears. I want those games more than any other every year

It's not over. The Packers are still mathematically alive. This is a must win game, have to win out from here. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...  The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!

Packers vs. Falcons:
Regular season, all-time: 15-14
All-time, Postseason: 2-2
All-time, in Green Bay: 7-4

Maybe Tramon Williams will return a pick 6 off of Ryan just for oldtime sakes.

Or Breeland does the pick 6 for Williams.

Still mathematically alive ricky and no one in the locker room is giving up for the sake of a better draft pick. Would nice if the Rams and Seahawks would win to close out the weekend. But yes ricky, bring on the Bears!

To clarify: no, I don't think the Packers are going to make the playoffs. And, as hurt as this team is, all I'm hoping for is spirit, enthusiasm and a willingness to try to win games. Show effort, show pride, show they want to keep their jobs. But playoffs? My wife does an amazingly good impression of Mora doing his immortal rant. Playoffs? Who cares. But winning out, and especially beating the Bears (again) in Chicago, and ruining their chances for the playoffs? That is worth cheering for in this household.

Now, since Rodgers played more efficiently and effectively than he has all year, was he sandbagging it to help get MM fired? And if he did, did the rest of the team take his side by the time of the Cardinal game? Because the new HC is going to have a real job getting him back under control IF this were true. We don't know, but what a difference a game and a HC change made.

It's been a mess this year, just want to see them play good football the next couple games. Think it's really important for the future of the team. If they are eliminated in week 17, wouldn't be against seeing Kizer.

Loved watching the team run down field to protect AR!

As a Wisconsin born and raised life-long Packer fan, two “theories” I personally find revolting, ridiculous, AND reprehensible:

1. ‘Tanking’ for the sake of moving up in the draft, and yes, I know it doesn’t necessarily mean throwing a game. I understand it might mean playing some of your young backups. As things are they’re already playing several end-of-the bench guys out of injury-induced necessity!

The Packers will have a relatively high pick just in the natural course of events, because I doubt they win out, and if they were to manage to win the final three games they’ll still be somewhere in the middle of the draft order. PLUS, they’ve got a bonus 1st from the Saints. There will still be A LOT of good players who can step right in and have a positive impact as well as fill a need, which are plentiful, for Green Bay!

2. Rodgers intentionally playing poorly to get McCarthy fired. I think the man is far too competitive to do such a thing. For crying out loud, he was intent on burying the competition in Celebrity Jeopardy!

I think it’s far more likely he’s not fully recovered from the knee injury, the collarbone break from last year, or a combination thereof. He got pounded again today, and the human body (especially an aging one) simply isn’t designed to absorb the kind of punishment these cats receive each game.

As for “playing better” this week. Statistically he still has a very pedestrian game, AND I don’t think it’s a bit unusual for a team to respond this way after a “change of coaching” shakeup. It’s like getting a shot of adrenalin. Next week, against a formidable and confident Bears team, I hope they can sustain what they started today!
