Title: 2019 Free agency
Post by: footballdad on December 19, 2018, 05:43:13 AM
One could make the case that the pack needs help everywhere. Let us assume that everyone currently under contract for 2019 comes back healthy with the exception of Perry and King.
It is hard to project exactly what will be needed without knowing who will be coaching on either side of the ball. For what it's worth, Pettine has my vote to return as DC. Imo he has done a fantastic job with what he has to work with.
Looking at the list of 2019 free agents that would address a need, these would be my targets to have a look at:
S - Tre Boston from Arizona and/or Landon Collins from the Giants. (sign one and draft one)
OLB - Dee Ford from KC. (sign one and draft 2)
TE - Jared Cook from the Raiders. If NO still wants Jimmy Graham, make the call and see what they would be willing to offer. (draft one)
That's it. If one was looking at starters.
Could then focus on o-line / d-line in the draft.

Morgan Burnett has asked to be released by Pittsburgh.

Should we have any interest?

Sure, lets get the old gang together! Cook, Burnett, shoot, lets go after Shields. Seriously, its time to abandon the past; kill it if necessary! Time to move forward. Yes on Collins, and draft another safety; yes of Saffold, and draft some more OL; TE? Good luck. Here's the list, though who might be tagged in some way is still unknown. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/tight-end/

Revised free agency predictions.

Nick Perry and Jimmy Graham are released. Gains the packers almost 8.7 mil in cap space. Total of 41 mil.

UFA Free agents signed:

Baushaud Breeland CB - 3 years - 19 mil (avg 6.33)
Landon Collins FS - 4 years - 38.5 mil (avg 9.625)
Jesse James TE - 4 years - 15 mil (avg 3.75)
Muhammed Wilkerson DE - 1 year - 5 mil
Shane Ray OLB - 3 years - 10 mil (avg 3.33)

O-line and pass rush addressed in the draft. Ford and Lindstrom - right side of offensive line set for years.

Collins is more of a strong safety. 2016 he had 5 ints, every other year he had no more than 2. He will get a lot of tackles and a few sacks but not a lot else.

We should sign Anthony Barr

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2019/01/21/packers-should-target-vikings-olb-anthony-barr-in-free-agency/

I live in so cal so I saw him play at UCLA. He was a beast rushing the passer as a 3-4 olb.

Green Bay doesn't have enough money to afford bidding for the top end Edge/OLB players in free agency. It's just a fact.

As much money as teams are going to throw at players like Barr and Dee Ford, to mention just two of upper end of the group, the Packers would be better advised to use this year draft which has very very good talent at Edge/OLB in the early rounds, and is also a "generational" draft at DL in regards to depth and talent. Many many good players to choose from this year, and youe get them for 4-5 years on a cheap rookie contract.

Post by: The GM on January 25, 2019, 04:19:30 PM
You also have to calculate the "Green Bay Factor".  Green Bay is not a destination landing spot for most FAs.  Its used as a bargaining chip for FAs to use in negotiations with others teams.   Most FAs arent coming to Green Bay unless they are overpaid what their market is.  Having to overspend gets you less bang for your buck on the FA market.  You gotta get FAs but you gotta be exceptionally smart in your choices.

OTC currently shows the Packers with $40.5M of cap space.

Teams typically allocate ~$6M for draft class, but Packers have 2 1st rounders this year, so figure ~$8M

Plus they need to allocate money for RFA's and ERFA's, I'm guessing as follows:
RFA-Geronimo Allison - ~$2M
ERFA-Justin McCray - ~$500K
ERFA-Lucas Patrick - ~$500K
ERFA-Adam Pankey - ~$500K
ERFA-Jake Kumerow - ~$500K
ERFA-Fadol Brown - ~$500K
ERFA-Robert Tonyan - ~$500K
ERFA - Reggie Gilbert - ~$500K

These allocations add up to ~$13.5M

So that means the Packers have about $27M operating cap space with which to use for Unrestricted Free Agency.

UFA Players of interest:
CB-Bashaud Breeland - I think he's earned a contract. And at only 26 he's got a lot of football ahead of him.
3yr/$22M (Guarantee him $11M. $6M signing bonus and $1M yr1 base and $4M guarantee roster bonus in yr 2) Keeps his cap hit in 2019 at a manageable $4M.

S-Adrian Amos - I'm avoiding the high price guys to try and squeeze as much out of the cap room we have.
3yrs/$16M (Like Breeland's, structure for 2019 cap hit of $4M.)

TE-Marcedes Lewis - Since Graham is staying, GB needs a run blocking TE than is dependable, and Marcedes is just that. Plus he has little market value and is a 10 year veteran. Veteran minimum is $1.03M, but lets make it a 2019 1yr/$1.5M deal. Draft a TE in 2019 to develop along with Tonyan. Did I mention that OC Hackett worked with Lewis in JAX? Maybe it works?

This leaves GB with about $17M in remaining cap space.

What else?
OLB?
Slot WR?
Anything?

OLB-Preston Smith (WASH) - There's a connection between Smith and Packers new LB coach Olivadotti. If he's not tagged maybe a deal could be swung. It will likely have to be a deal that averages around $11M/$12M per year, but maybe could be structured to only count $7M/$8M in yr1?
OLB Za'Darius Smith will likely command a similar contract.
Shaquil Barrett and Aaron Lynch would cost less, likely in the $6M/$7M per year range.

Still.............this eats up about 1/2 of that remaining $17M in cap space, and teams always like to keep some in reserve.

Slot WR's Cole Beasley and Jamison Crowder are likely in the $5M/$6M dollar range, so adding either of them would leave GB with about $3M in remaining cap space. I'd maybe be in favor of drafting a slot WR. There's several intersting ones in this draft.

Need more cap room?

Two suggestions:
One............cut Tramon Williams and gain $4.75M in cap space. He's 36 now if they sign Breeland it makes him expendable. He served a purpose this last year, but is not needed now.
Two...........cut Mike Daniels and gain $8.3M in cap space. Both he and Wilkerson landed on IR. He turns 30 in May 2019. This is a very deep DL draft, and we have 2 players (Fadol and Lancaster) that played pretty decent in his stead this last year. Does Pettine want him? Is he a cornerstone for Pettine going forward? Or is the future now and it's better to move on. Keeping him may stunt the grow of younger players.

These are suggestions as food for thought and discussion. Just  twocents)

We should sign Anthony Barr

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2019/01/21/packers-should-target-vikings-olb-anthony-barr-in-free-agency/

I live in so cal so I saw him play at UCLA. He was a beast rushing the passer as a 3-4 olb.

I think of all the FA's signing Barr might have the biggest impact on the D side of the ball. or even anyone on the O side not named Brown or Odell Beckam

Don't think Vikes have the money to tag him.

Maybe better than any safety available....maybe without a doubt

Barr might be interested if he was able to go back to the OLB in a 3-4 vs playing in a 4-3 more inside.

Money???? did anyone think we would even be in the hunt for K Mack????? or even try

Biggest factor......cuts down dramatically on chances of Rodgers getting another broken collar bone :)

This should be a fun week for fans as the FA rumors fly.

Just got a text from a friend in Cleveland, says that the Browns are clearing cap space and the local Browns beat thinks it because they have a trade worked out for ODJ. That was rumored last year also, tomorrow will be interesting.

Not a prediction but what I would like to see in free agency:

Adrian Amos would be my first choice at Safety (Thomas would be from a talent standpoint) and would kick the tires and gauge interest, but I would consider making a hard run at Eric Weddle. Yes he is older. Couple that with drafting Thornhill, Adderly, or Savage and IMO we are covered at the position both now and moving forward.

Baushaud Breeland. Capable vet. Young secondary. Enough said.

Preston or Za'Darius Smith. Both can provide pass rush, are young and durable, and play the run very well. Would be happy with either guy.

Shane Ray in addition to one of the Smiths. Should come considerably cheaper and be a pretty good bang for your buck situational pass rusher. The addition of these guys should lessen the feeling that we must take a pass rusher in the first round. By doing so guys like Oliver, Wilkins, Williams, Risner, White, or Hockenson come into play at 12. Or one could swing for the fences if Quinnen Williams drops to #4. Both our 1sts could make it happen. Could select a developmental guy later such as Banago, Winovich, or Nelson.

Would like to see Roger Saffold as well, but working with limited funds. Not monopoly money.

Ok then. Moving on. Next man up. Tre Boston would be my next choice at safety. Would also check out Amendola as he was just cut by Miami. Proven slot/ cold weather receiver.

Here's another name to add.  Jacksonville released 5-11 212 free safety Tashau Gipson in a cost saving move. " Gipson has very strong ball skills in the secondary according to one article. He plays very well in a Cover 2 setting and has shined in man coverage as well. In seven NFL seasons with the Jaguars and Cleveland Browns, Gipson has produced 399 tackles, 38 pass breakups and 20 interceptions."

He played for Pettine in Cleveland and with the Packers O coordinator Hackett this season so they know what he has to offer.
Title: Re: 2019 Free agency
Post by: dannobanano on March 09, 2019, 12:41:43 PM
I saw That about Gipson yesterday.

His cap number in JAX was going to be $9.5M this year.

I would take him on for that, but given the existing relationship on the Packer coaching staff, if he’d take a deal like Wilkerson got last year it’s maybe worth a shot.

Does that affect them wanting to trade Ford?   confused(

At the very least I think it ups the ante on what they want in return for Ford, don't you?

I can see why a person may draw the conclusion that it would affect the trade value, but I just don't believe Houston was ever in their plans and for that reason I don't believe it changes anything. IMHO

Disclaimer: All numbers are taken from Spotrac.

Packers available cap space - top 51: $34,676,842
Dollars needed for 2019 draft class: $10,263,680
$ to spend on free agency = $24,413,162

Release to gain dollars:
Nick Perry - $3,337,500
Tramon Williams - $4,750,000
Cole Madison - $407,833

Puts $ to spend @ $32,908,495

Spotrac estimates for the following:
Baushaud Breeland - CB - $7,000,000
Preston Smith - OLB - $11,100,000
Roger Saffold - G - $7,100,000
Shaq Barrett - OLB - $7,100,000
Adrian Amos - FS - $8,000,000
Za'Darius Smith - OLB - $8,900,000

Players of note without estimates:
Tre Boston - FS - 10 int in 39 starts over last 4 years. Honey Badger just got $14 mil from KC. 10 int in 56 starts over last 4 years. Boston's value just went up.
Aaron Lynch - OLB - ?
Shane Ray - OLB - ?

How to proceed? Damned if I know. But this is what I would try to do. First off, since safeties are killing it, I would look at the draft for help. When idiot gm's/owners stupidly set a market.....
I would make the cuts listed above and keep my fingers crossed that it was the correct thing to do. So with 32/33 mil in space, attempt to add the following:

Baushaud Breeland - CB - 3 years - 22.5 mil - avg $7,500,000
Aaron Lynch - Edge - 3 years - 13.5 mil - avg $4,500,000
Shane Ray - Edge - 3 years - 12.5 mil - avg $4,170,000
Roger Saffold - RG - 3 years - 24 mil - avg $8,000,000

Leaves about $8,000,000 for in season emergency.

Would go BPA in draft but look at adding FS, TE, OT, and Edge with upside but not in the first round unless the obvious BPA fell into our lap.

Would also possibly look at bringing in a vet QB to back up Rodgers. Maybe Fitzpatrick?

I really think ZaDarious Smith is the name that will be added. He's built to stop the run and apply pressure. I would think he of all the FA fits the need of the Packers more than anyone still available. So, I'm hoping Gutsy gets him and a TE.

Agree Hands that ZaDarious being a former DE  might be the logical choice now. I hear a little buzz about Amos also, worth a flyer at the right price. In the end hopefully the money isn't a regrettable thing.

FWIW........................Gute said today that they aren't done with free agency just yet.

Does he mean they still hope to sign CB/Breeland and S/Campbell, but at Gute's price and not the players pie-in-the-sky price?
Or...............does he have an eye on someone outside Packerland?

Stay tuned!!
