So what are peoples general feelings with the first pick (12th overall). Trade up, trade down, stay at 12?

Very flexible.  If there's someone they love and is worth it, go get him.  If your guy isnt there at 12 move back a few spots if you can.  I think they will have some decent options at 12..

Montez Sweat misdiagnosed, and Packers looking to trade up from 30.

Hoping for trade down. We need to reload across the board with a lot of younger, talented, cheap guys.

Want an immediate starter from 1st round ....

If the Pack stays put my guess is on Wilkins at 12.

Does Arizona take Murray or surprise with someone else?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: phanatic1 on April 25, 2019, 05:13:05 PM
They have to take Murray.  Kingsbury has loved him for years.  Packers pick at #12 - will be traded!!  Moving down and picking up another day 2 pick tomorrow.

You don't hire a just fired college coach to install the air raid system and not get him his QB.
No doubt it's  Kyler Murray, a local kid.

Well, does pick 2 hold form also and the 49ers takes Bosa?

Do the Jets trade out of the 3rd pick?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Sweat, White, or Bush in that order depending on availability
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Well, isn't smart money on Quinnen Williams or Josh Allen?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: Participant on April 25, 2019, 05:42:36 PM
And, the Raiders. I think Josh Allen is the guy. Speculation all week it'll be a surprise and they sent scouts home so nothing got leaked, but losing Mack, this drops perfectly for them.

Raiders should be Allen or White. Anyone else in the mix there?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

If there is a "surprise," the only one that would do that is Hockenson, right?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Wow, didn't see Ferrell.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Raiders provide first surprise. I like Ferrell....just didn't think Gruden liked him that much.

Cool. Talent keeps falling our way. As long as the QB desperation stays in the top ten we may have a great shot at some real talent.

Reach. But a good pick.  Now it gets interesting.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

I LOVE Ferrell.   Forget the testing...or lack thereof...he's an incredible talent.  Sometimes teams and fans just need to ignore the underwear olympics and just draft football players.   Would have been a 1st rounder last year but wanted that National Championship - great football character.  Great pickup by Oakland even considering players still available.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: Participant on April 25, 2019, 05:54:47 PM
Ferrell is a good football player. If he's their guy, no problem. What they will be scrutinized for is they probably could have gotten him by trading down a bit and getting extra picks. Maybe they knew another team was targeting him around their pick. We'll see how it works out.

That's the problem participant - nobody knows if a player truly would have been available later.  Sometimes if you like a guy you just need to take him

Totally agree. He's been the 2nd best edge in the draft all along. OAK got it right.

Ok, lets move up and get Allen or Oliver.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: Gregg on April 25, 2019, 05:59:32 PM
That is a surprise.

I thought Ferrell would go in the middle of the round, like Number 13.

I mean with Allen, Sweat and Oliver there?  IMP, they are all better pass rushers than Ferrell.  Ferrell is amore of an all around DE.

I agree they should have traded down.

Tampa takes White. Do the take a defensive player or they take a QB?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Wouldn't it be something if the Packers trade to move up for Allen, thoughts?

Pick a QB so another guy can fall...
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

I agree then we can move up and get Sweat or Allen.

Or with all these surprises, hey they might be there.

Funny with White's love of horses (according to his pre-draft tv bios he literally travels everywhere with one of his horses)- Tampa Bay just doesn't seem the right fit

I think Allen is best player in the draft

So much for the Gettleman - we love our Eli talk.

Love the pick.....for us

Would like to see Haskins go soon - maybe to Bengals or Dolphins with a trade up
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Jacksonville may abandon its OT thoughts and go with Allen?
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: Donzo on April 25, 2019, 06:06:54 PM
Here we go.

I'm not up to speed on rankings, but Jones going before #12 is good for the Pack... A very good prospects will be there at #12.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: Gregg on April 25, 2019, 06:07:08 PM
That is even more surprising.

Lock is supposed to be the better QB.  I thought Jones would go in the lower middle, like about 18.

But that is what happens with QB's.  There are some people who compare Jones with Ponder.  Because he does not have a strong arm.

Well, good for us.  We can now get Allen or Sweat or Oliver or Hockenson.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: ThatGuy284 on April 25, 2019, 06:07:24 PM
Apparently, Haskins should have thrown that 51st TD this season if he wanted to get drafted
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: Donzo on April 25, 2019, 06:09:08 PM
I think Allen is best player in the draft

I watched a lot of SEC football, and you could be right... Oh well, he's a Jag now.

Good for JAX.   That was a good spot for OT or even Hock.   Allen is a great BPA.

*sheds tear* buh-bye Allen

Anyone else have the sense the Lions may go with Hockenson? Either that or they could go with Sweat on the defensive side. Both fill a need I think.

Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Sweat, Oliver, Burns, Wilkins,  Simmons.......Dillard, Taylor, Williams, Hock, Fant

Hock is really going to help the Lions.  Both in the run game and as a receiver.

Shoot.  Good gift for Stafford.  Manna from heaven.

Too early for Hock. Hopefully that QB carousel picks up. Bush keeps looking more like the pick, assuming Sweat is gone.
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments
Post by: ThatGuy284 on April 25, 2019, 06:23:28 PM
With original draft projections I thought we might be great trade partners with Carolina - but the way the draft has progressed I don't see a need for Car to trade up unless Dillard is sitting there and they really want him over Sweat, Burns, Williams or Taylor
Title: Re: Day 1 Live Draft Comments

Why not take Sweat or Burns?

Gary has always been one of those "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane types".

He just does not get the most out of his ability.  Do the Packers think their coaching will do it?

I sure hope they are correct.  Pretty high to take him, I thought he was more like a number 19 or 20.

Christian Wilkins went with the next pick. He’s been my choice at #12 for two months. Great athlete, better FB player. Awesome team leader, all hustle all the time, smart (graduated in 2.5 years), grounded, humble,  Packer people.

And we take underachiever Rashan Gary.

A guy I saw training near me. He's huge and fast. If he puts it together...will be few better.

Absolutely. But he is a project at #112. Not someone you can plug and play, especially at OLB. There are also questions about his love for the game, since he already has his own sports business. So, I was unhappy when Bush was grabbed by Pitt. But I thought maybe Fant, maybe an OL. Gary was not on the radar.
All that written, if the coaches can reach him, and the other guys on the defense can reach him, he could be impactful. This is a big "boom/bust" pick. Very unhappy >:(

Oy.

Amen.

Why Horrible? Seems to be something the Packers can use.

Not productive.

No, he was productive, just not as productive as some hoped... What needs to be noted is that he played at very young age. He was 18, 19 & 20 his three years at UM.

10 sacks over a whole career as the #1 high school player in the nation is a severe under achievement. And he is injured to boot. Not a good first look in this years draft.

Before I get too sad or happy....I am reminded of the fact Green Bay has done a ton of studying on him. They see something they can make a great player. So maybe he'll be a edge rusher and eventually learn the game and becoming a leader.
I like that he was very emotional on the phone.

What I'm hopeful for...and highly doubtful will occur...is that GB fans give Gary a chance to develop over the next few seasons without riding every move he makes.    Take a few years before booing every missed play or trashing him as a draft bust after preseason game 1.    Certainly wasn't high on my wishlist but he's a Packer now and not his fault he was the pick - lot of fans seem to hold a grudge against players they didn't want and create a merciless environment for them

Look, we will all give the kid a shot and we hope his production comes close to matching his incredible athletic ability, but to say this pick was anything less than a tremendous reach isn't being realistic. They are banking on being able to reach this kid, and they left a number of very good players on the board that were all significantly better players than this guy.

Turn him loose!

Incorrect.

Age factor is big here... He was 18, 19 and 20 yrs old at UM.

For perspective, Winovich didn't play at UM until he was 20yrs old.

That's going to be a tall order since he is our highest pick since Raji, and it's a very big reach. Maybe he proves everyone wrong and shows right away, but a #12 is supposed to produce right away.

Welcome Rashan Gary to the Green Bay Packers. Looked at the numbers and background on Gary. Here's my take. He made 44 tackles, seven for loss and 3.5 sack in nine games. When compared to other DL that played a whole season was , the numbers are VERY comparable in production...except maybe those that had already been taken. And, he was injured last year. That may be the only question on the pick. However, I'm sure the Packers did their homework on him. In addition, even before combine and pro day, in the top 10-20 prospects on most everyone's listing.

His emotions should tell us how much this means to him. I do like kids from Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, etc. Know what its like to play in northern climate. I'm going with the glass more than half full on this folks. We'll see.

I'm of the opinion that the GB Packers will still be around in the seasons following 2019.   Our season performance is NOT contingent on a 1st rounder -- #12 or otherwise.

Allow the man to develop as I assume the Packers will still have a team in 2020 and beyond

- or hold it against Gary that the Pack brass valued him highly...whatever....

Up front, I wanted Sweat, like many others.  But why did I want Sweat?  Because I read stuff from talking heads on ESPN, NFL Network, etc.  Why was I not overly excited about Gary, because of stuff I read from said talking heads.
My point is not a single one of us interviewed this kid nor did the due diligence the Packers did.  I remember a lot of people were not overly excited about Jaire Alexander last year, how'd that turn out?
Let this play out.  The scouts and GMs know A LOT more than every single person on this board.  Disappointment is fine but let's keep some perspective.

That said, I really hope Fant falls to 30.

I would not say he plays like Jane. He plays tough and causes a lot of disruption but didn't finish enough plays. That being said, I'm not excited about the pick. I'm more concerned about the injury than his production, however his production is still lacking as a top 15 pick in the draft. It's definitely a risky pick that makes you scratch your head. I believe they could have done better.

Sweat is dropping because of the medical issue...I'm assuming. Speculating to pick #30 for the Packers, we'll need to see what's there, but I think there could be a real good OL there. Not sure of a TE there. Never a big fan of ANY player sitting out a schools' bowl game to prepare, and that's what Fant did, correct?

A couple CBs dropping to that area might be something to consider with injuries the Packers seem to have in the defensive backfield.

Darnell Savage. EXCELLENT!

RT, perhaps the Packers thought Fant would drop further. When he was snatched by Denver, they went after their guy rather than miss again (as perhaps happened when Pittsburgh jumped to #10 and got Bush). Is this inexperience or a guy they had high on their board, and made sure they got the guy the wanted. Also, how much influence does Pettine have in these picks?

Okay I am trying to look at the pick through the eyes of the packers brass.

Gary rocked the combine. Really a dominant performance at 6’4” 280 lbs he was top five or so in nearly every category of testing. Superb athlete.

As the most dominant player on UM’s DLine, Gary was double teamed on nearly play, which would partly explain his lack of production, as well as the reason Devin Bush was free to run to the football.

They interviewed him and fully researched his background and personality and must be pretty sure of his attitude, character, and intelligence.

Although he wasn’t anywhere on my list of players I hoped the packers would select, I will be rooting for him to succeed.

With Gute bringing his front office guy over from the Ravens, they probably had some good intel there. If they really wanted him they probably needed to make this trade.

I like the player a lot but didn't like the trade up too much.

Good comments... The value of the trade was fair, though.

Colts just traded out of 26 and Prisco is reporting that Savage was their guy.

They must've really loved Savage to spend three picks in him because this is a deep Safety draft.

Speed to burn but short ish.

According to the trade value chart we should have given up both 4ths, our 5th and our 1st 6th rounder if not both to even out value.   We did well in that trade by that measure.

Most probably would have preferred a trade down but value was good and ultimately I think Savage becomes a fan favorite.

I think having the seeming "want to" as far as hitting ability, speed, versatility, kick returning, and overall coverage ability was too much to take the chance of missing out one him.

Redskins with Sweat -- would have preferred him over Gary but maybe we just didn't want to tinker with his ticker?  Maybe he's a bit of a head case too?  (one of those things we fans aren't privy to until they go all Antonio Brown on your ass)

Not shocking with 3 first rounders but I really like what Oakland did with their picks.   Ferrell, Jacobs, Abrams

When was the last 1st round with a couple safeties but no CB's taken?

14 of the first 28 picks are defensive front seven players.

Expect we may trade down from #44 tomorrow to recapture additional picks

Thinking that is has a fair likelihood.

Trade up for DK Metcalf. Make it happen Gutey.

HAHA, GOD NO!

I mean our #1 pick was made on potential and combine numbers, so our #3 pick cant be?

Byron Murphy is a good corner.  may go to Seattle here?

Wow, hell of a 1st round for the Redskins.

They picked a guy who clearly is not happy to be playing for them. I wouldnt call that a good night.

Huh? I'd say incorrect... He had a 100 pressures in three years, most of them as a teenager = production.

Haskins was pissed and shaking his head when the skins picked him. Even all 4 commentators are talking about his negative reaction. One even said he looks "pissed."

Wouldnt Savage have been there in round 2 or the very least #30? Wow. This is  facepalm) facepalm) facepalm) banghead banghead banghead

No. Savage was Seattle's guy. Either at 21 or 29 he was going.

Then why did Seattle trade out of 21 with us?

Think he's in the 3rd.   Can't see us taking him now but I think his combine interview stuff was overblown.   Think he would have been worth the risk end-2nd or sometime 3rd but the OLB room is too crowded at this point

How do we get 5 more picks in the 2nd?

Small bit of irony in that the Packers used the 4th round pick that they got for Clinton-Dix  to trade up for Savage.

Well, I did not know much about Savage but he looks pretty good in the write ups.

He really raised his stock at the combine and the senior bowl.

He runs under 4.4 so that means he can cover the field and may be able to go one on one with a slot WR.

He also played in a tough conference and made second team.  That tells me that he has game speed.

We sure have concentrated on defense.  Does Pettine have dirt on Gute?

I have to say the Skins got two really good players IMO at two key positions.

One of Darnell Savage's top athletic comps is ... Damarious Randall. Packers giving themselves a do-over after playing Damarious out of position for three years

It might be tough to land a OL tomorrow. Six Packer types were taken in the first round and Dalton Risner, Elgton Jenkins and Greg Little are probably the only 3 OL left with day 2 grades on them.

Well, I got these wrong. I was thinking of O-Lineman and slot. On the other hand, the Packer defense has been slow for years. They took 2 freakish players on defense. I'm thinking they are going to attack on defense. I'm still very concerned about Rt. Tackle. Bulaga is done. At the end of last year, he couldn't go more than one step in any direction. AND he's been hurt a lot. If they could get a WR and a Tackle the next couple of rounds they could get all the way back!

OL, sure. Who? IDK. But at TE? I'm sticking with the belief the Packers are going to go with Sternberger. Give him a year to assimilate into the offense and get some experience with AR, and next year he could take over for Graham. JMO.

I'm hoping we can get Cody Ford in the 2nd, shore up the right side of the O-line. Protect Rodgers and open holes for Jones.

Jawaan Taylor, Cody Ford, Dalton Risner

Could use a cornerback as well considering Kevin King's health issues. Some good ones left.

As for TE I like the Oliver kid from San Jose State as well.
