Title: Day 2 Live Draft Comments

Thanks Mancl we are open for Day 2 comments.
Title: Day 2 options
Post by: mancl on April 26, 2019, 05:01:30 AM
With no 4th round picks the Packers almost have to take an o lineman and tight end.

These include

Cody Ford and Taylor-  Both were considered lst round picks - not sure why they dropped.

Greg Little- they had him in for a visit

Risner-

Little is strictly a tackle while the others can play either position

Any tight end not from Iowa

I really think Jonah from AL was going to be GB's pick at 12, but other teams liked him better. They may think the players in hand can handle the OT position if Bulaga goes down for any length of time verses any player on the board now. In Williams that got a great OT...now they got a potentially great DE/Edge guy so maybe WR and TE are the picks tonight and OT for the third day.

Still some talent on the board for round 2:

Drew Lock
DK Metcalf
AJ Brown
Deebo Samuel
Irv Smith
Jawaan Taylor
Dalton Risner
Cody Ford
Erik McCoy
Chase Winovich
Greedy Williams
Byron Murphy
Chauncey Gardner Johnson
Nasir Adderley
Juan Thornhill

A second round mock:

Not sure if the link will work.  We ended up with Risner in this one.

With the Both 4th rounders now gone!! We got to and better draft wisely cause after the 3rd round at #75 it’s 75 picks away until the 5 round at pick 150!! So I hope Darnell Savage is worth both of them 4th round picks.. I’m still scratching my head on Rashaun Gary.. I believe if Hockenson was still on the board would we have taken him.. I’m not upset with our picks yes giving up both 4ths hurts, but maybe Savage will be a homerun hit.. However!! Whoever we draft is what us Packer fans have too accept and let it play out.. Yes there’s going to be bust that’s going to happen.. Let these coaches and Gm do there jobs. Just remember!! These other guys that we don’t draft.. They can be bust as well!! So I feel these other teams aren’t better than us cause they drafted these top named players!! These players have to have heart and Charisma did I spell that right.. So let’s wish for the best outcome and let the Gm and coaches do there jobs!!

Green Bay brought in Turner, Cole Madison returned to the team,  I think they believe they can run with what they have and we wont see an OL until later in the draft. I wouldnt be surprised to see Irv Smith Jr. Or D.K. Metcalf with the next pick. Then maybe Henderson out of Memphis in the third. We need another running back that isnt just a street Walker, and TE isnt a dire need because of the 3 we already have, but it could be an investment that pays off.

Needs ILB, RB, TE, QB, Slot WR

Think day 2 picks will come from these position groups.

Got them right on day 1 we went DL and S.

Today BPA I am guessing they go ILB and Slot WR.

WR run will probably start early.  Couple of guys AJ Brown, Parris Campbell, Mecole Hardman

ILB Mack Wilson

TE Warring, Moreau, Sternburger

RB Day 3 have no idea

QB Trade for Rosen?  Be ideal IMO.  Otherwise Lock, Grier, Finley

Possible we double up on S too.  Have starters now but still need another.  Thornhill? or CB and shift Jackson to S?

Gutey is trading up and targeting players, wonder if he offers up next year's picks to move up. Seattle is there near the top of the 2nd.

I think we will either move up or back tonight.. I just listenened to a interview by Gutey and it sounds like he has a plan on either moving up or back!! I’m hoping we move back just a few spots to get either and extra 3rd and a 4th back or an extra fifth.. we still have 2 6th round pics so anything is likely.. I want Either Deebo Samuel and Andy Isabella or Hakeem Butler or AJ Brown at WR!! At linebacker Drew Tranquill will be awesome at ILB!! He can do it all... if we draft a RB Dexter Williams!! Jace Sterbrrger will be the TE the Pack is targeting!! An and and if we do go get a QB!! Will Grier to be the back up!! There!! There is some of my thoughts!! Go Pack Go!!

Not usually the Packers MO trading future picks.  He is clearly targeting guys.  One thing I can guarantee is by the end of the night we will all be scratching out heads.

Turner and Madison are both solid linemen. Unless Risner, Little, or another starter quality guy falls, they may settle on development OT on day three. Taylor has a bad knee, he may be off the board.
Now think about Lock, what if he falls? My word can you imagine the trades that Green Bay will be offered? (At least I would hope they get  those trade request)

Could see a run on WRs here in the second round:

Metcalf
AJ Brown
Parris Campbell
Deebo Samuel
Kelvin Harmon

I think CB is a bigger need than has been expressed. Kevin King continues to struggle with his injury. There will be a few viable CB options at #44 and if one of the offensive linemen isn't there, CB might be a good fallback.

Agree, they may have a tough call to make at 44 with a number of position options available.

I think you are correct Hands about the OL prospects. Little and Risner are 2, but I'm going to add a third who I think could strongly be in play at 44. Back at the start of the combine Tony Pauline made a flippant comment on a podcast about a Packers scout telling him that the Packers had a high grade on C/G Elgton Jenkins from Mississippi State and Tony speculated that Jenkins could be an option at the end of the first round for the Packers. I wasn't crazy about that thought, but I did note that and now I don't think 44 would be a bad spot for him.

As I have stated a few times before, by signing Turner who could be the future RT, drafting a player like Jenkins if he the BPA should be on the table.

With about the next 50 players tiered about the same, I expect that any offer to trade back will be welcomed by them. Problem is that 30 other teams are probably thinking the same thing.

I'm personally not on board with trading future picks. But SET4YRS I could be talked into getting on the Parris Campbell bandwagon for 44 now. He is probably one of the top players on the Packers board now. Only question is will he get by 11 other picks to the Packers at 44?

I looked a quite a few 2nd round  mocks from today.  Most had Campbell going around pick 60. If the Packers are interested they very well could have a decent shot at him.  I saw one that had him as the pick.  We'll see.

KC could be interested in Campbell with all the T Hill stuff going on.

Although o-line may be the way to go, doubt if they will. With the addition of Turner and Madison coupled with the fact that the new system is a better fit for Spriggs, they may be ok.
I would like to see them move back a bit in an effort to get a 4th round pick back.

Jags take OT Taylor at #35.

The 49er's take WR Samuel at #36.

Panthers take OT Little at #37, that might of been the top player on the Packers board.

2 OT's off the board.

With the 44th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the #Packers select Elgton Jenkins, OC, Mississippi State.

Elgton Jenkins posted a Elite #RAS with  Great size, Great speed, Good explosiveness, Good agility at the OC position.

They list him at center, and said he looked much more comfortable senior bowl center than guard.  Didn't Lofton announce him as a guard, though?

I trust the Packers scouting, and assume they are wise.  I think the fact they took an inside guy is pretty interesting.

I wonder if entering today, they saw a big group of good OL?  But then with four gone before their pick, their pool of OL was running out fast?

Jenkins is currently 23; he'll turn 24 in December. So, about one or two years older than most draftees. But the guy sounds legit, getting better year to year. Hopefully this continues.

Yeah, turning 24 during the season is pretty old.  O well.  Received a lot of academic recognitions, so that's good.  Played only a handful of games at guard years ago, has been all center the last two years.  So, kind of resolves the question of who backs up Linsley in the event of injury.

Sternberger may be the Patriots pick at 64. I'm guessing the Packers would be happy with Warring or Knox at 75, but not sure if any of them get to 75.

I totally had OL on my wish list, so excited to get Jenkins.

Admit surprised at a center-first guy.  I had anticipate doing what TT always did, and going after a college OT.  (Yes, I know, Gute isn't TT.)  I figured an OT made best sense because Bulaga is expiring, and usually a really good college OT can transition to guard if needed.  So a good OT/OG selection would really provide a lot of injury insurance for this year, and could fit into a lot of starting spots next year depending on who they might want to replace.

O well, hopefully Bulaga and Bakhti will never get injured again and will be terrific starting tackles for years to come.

Turner very well may be the RT after the Bulaga contract expires.

TE Oliver goes 3.5.  NE still ahead of us, too.

Packers are at 75 and NE is at 72, are they both interested in the same TE? Will the Packers bump in front of them to land their guy?

Kahale Warring was still available. More upside than Sternberger but more of a project. Sternberger should be able to contribute right away.

Sternberger has to make people happy.   He was only 1 of 4 TE's I had rated in the top 3 rnds.

--on a side note - RB Montgomery was a big, big favorite of mine.   Now I hate him as much as I hate Hockenson...

Well the Packers got 4 exciting players added to the roster. Now they will wait until pick 150 to start 4 more picks to try and add some backend depth for the roster. A nice set of 4.

On a side note I believe that Sternberger is the first packers pick they had in for an official 30 visit.

I am kind of surprised not to see a move back to recoup a 4th round pick.  But, Sternberger seems to be the first guy that most are shaking their head yes at.  Jenkins was not mentioned a lot or connected to the Packers.  Reviews though sound like he may be a solid interior guy.

RT - what should we look for tomorrow??  Give us some names - trades.

Sternberger was a 5'9 HS QB, a shoulder injury robbed him of arm strength.  He grew 6 inches between his soph and junior year.  Very good 3 sport athlete in HS.

A willing blocker he just isnt very good at it.  Will need to get stronger.  He's got some good receiving tools and potential.

Turner very well may be the RT after the Bulaga contract expires.

Yes, that's definitely one of the possibilities.  But I think it's at least as likely that Turner will prove to be variably deficient and not good enough to be the RT solution.  Who knows.  He may or may not b good enough to hold down the RG position.

Uncertainty, as usual.  His contract is modest enough, he gets the shot, and if he earns it he can keep a starting spot, whether at guard or perhaps be considered to succeed Bulaga.  But his contract isn't that big, and his cap his won't be that large.  Probably at least as likely that he won't pan out as a long-term starter as that he will.

But, part of the Gute plan is to create more flexibility and possibilities.  So, we'll have to see.  I'd just expected the OL pick to be in that Bulaga-replacement-possibility pool.  But dont' think Jenkins probably will be.

I like the Jenkins pick.  Smart, solid and durable player.  I think hes one of those guys that's going to be in the league for a long time.

Jenkins probably has been scouted more than any player drafted by the Packers::)

"Last year, his offensive coordinator at Mississippi State was Luke Getsy, who previously was the Packers’ receivers coach and is now back in Green Bay as quarterbacks coach. Walls said Getsy was “fired up” about the selection, calling Jenkins a player the Bulldogs “trusted” up front."

"“He’s a grown man,” Gutekunst said of the 6-4, 310-pounder. “At the Senior Bowl, one thing you could really see was his ability to move big men. He’s got power, and that was kind of what sold me."
