Free Agency -- Rating the Raters
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:20:34 AM »
Which source, in your experience or reviewing a past year's ratings and their accuracy seems best at grading free agents?
They clearly must evaluate different qualities, but who seems most accurate and who is often way off?

I ask because, for example, in looking at GB's Brad Jones:

ESPN (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/freeagency/index?year=2013&position=30)  - which lumps all LB together - has him buried deeply on the grade chart while rating ILBs Ellerby, Dansbe, Urlacher, Scott, Spikes as better.

WalterFootball (http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2013ILB.php) on the other hand rates him as best ILB available and worthy of a big contract.

ESPN and Walt are pretty much opposites in my opinion.  ESPN takes forever to move players up or down (see Urlacher not being able to cover anyone and he's ranked near Ellerby) and Walt jumps to conclusions on pretty much everything.

My buddy is a big Colts fan and they just signed Cherilus for a $7 million a year deal and ESPN says it's a great investment in keeping Luck protected and Cherilus had his best season yet in 2012.  Then Walt says the move must have been made by Matt Millen b/c it was such a terrible signing.  So I think your best bet is to use an average of some of those sites

I don't believe Walt does much analysis.  His rankings are pretty bad when it comes to FAs.  I think his draft rankings kinda suck too.

I enjoy reading Walt if only just to see if I can pick up more info on the players.  However, I usually hate how he mocks.  Especially to GB, Eifert in the 1st....ugh....
If you're gonna be dumb, you've gotta be tough.
