Raiders release Jones

31 y/o.

If anything, we're over stocked at WR, so Jennings and Jones aren't coming here.

Raiders to release WR James Jones:
Veteran receiver James Jones is being released by the Raiders, Scott Bair of CSN Bayarea reports. The San Jose native received a phone call from general manager Reggie McKenzie on Sunday evening informing him of the news.
Jones confirmed this information to CSN reporter Fallon Smith via text message.
Jones signed a three-year contract with the team last offseason.
Jones had 73 recpetions for 666 yards and six touchdowns in 2014, in what will be his only season as a Raider.
The San Jose State alum was the Packers' third-round pick in 2007.

I always liked JJ but dont see any room at The GB Inn and gotta say Ted made the right decision/roster moves.
Lousy timing though. I expect other veterans - not already on the market, may be so basis draft day results.

Why would they cut James?

He signed a very reasonable contract, put up 77 catches in a terrible offense and provides some veteran leadership.

Very confusing.

Typical Oakland Raiders move.  You wonder why this is one of the NFL's worst run franchises.  No better way to help your second year QB but to cut your most consistant WR from the year prior.

9 Amari Cooper WR 20 6-1 211 R --
15 Michael Crabtree WR 27 6-1 214 7 Texas Tech
4 Andre Debose WR -- 6-0 190 R --
83 Jeremy Gallon WR 25 5-8 185 R Michigan
18 Andre Holmes WR 26 6-4 210 4 Hillsdale

Apparently, they're cutting two players:  http://espn.go.com/blog/oakland-raiders/post/_/id/10934/why-are-the-raiders-releasing-james-jones-and-miles-burris

That's too bad for JJ, and I too am puzzled by Oakland's move. I have a feeling though, that he'll land on his feet. I wonder if minnesota has called him yet?   ( - ;#

Can't remember where, but I read that they cut him to allow him to sign with another team before the start of training camp. He had fallen down the depth chart after they signed Michael Crabtree and drafted Amari Cooper.

According to the ESPN article:

The Raiders used the No. 4 overall pick on Alabama receiver Amari Cooper, who is expected to be the team's No. 1 receiver. But Cooper is not the lone reason why Jones is getting cut. Jones will be replaced by Michael Crabtree, who was signed last month. Crabtree and Jones are similar players. Jones had a better year for the Raiders in 2014 than Crabtree had for the 49ers. He was terrific on third down with 31 catches. Crabtree had 68 catches and just 22 on third down. And finally, Crabtree, at 27, is four years younger than Jones. Drafting Cooper adds to the depth at the position. The Raiders like Rod Streater and Andre Holmes. If Jones was kept, those players would get less repetitions. Oakland also has youngsters Brice Butler, Kenbrell Thompkins and undrafted free-agent Josh Harper. Harper will get a long look this summer because of the chemistry he developed with second-year quarterback Derek Carr at Fresno State"

According to Spotrac, here's the OAK / WR $$ tally:

Michael Crabtree 27 - Avg Salary: 3,200,000, Expires: 2016
Rod Streater WR 27 - Avg Salary: $2,356,000, Expires: 2016
Brice Butler WR 25 - Avg Salary: $556,875, Expires: 2017
Andre Holmes WR - Avg Salary: $1,542,000, Expires: 2016
Kenbrell Thompkins WR 26 - Avg Salary: $495,833, Expires: 2016
Seth Roberts WR 24 - Avg Salary: $435,000, Expires: 2016
Jeremy Gallon WR 25 - Avg Salary: $435,000, Expires: 2016
Rahsaan Vaughn WR 24 - Avg Salary: $420,000, Expires: 2015
Amari Cooper WR 20 - Rookie, Expires: 2019
Andre Debose WR - Rookie, Expires: 2019
Josh Harper WR

I recall reading something last year where JJ commented "if he'd realized how bad things were in OAK he'd not have come" - something to that affect. Perhaps that less than ringing endorsement plus a ton of younger WR's that need playing time and who's contracts need extending.......?

I've always liked James Jones, and I think he's getting a raw deal in Oakland. With the number of quality young players brought in recently (Adams, Montgomery, Janis and Abrederis) there's just no room for him in Green Bay. Hopefully he catches on somewhere.

Miles Burris is a guy that I'm interested in simply because he's a hard worker who should be solid on special teams and as a reserve. Considering the questions at ILB, I would at least take a look at a young player who started every game last year.
