Here's my three candidates - Carmicheal from NO, Lombardi from NO and Fitzpatrick from Northwestern.  Guys from NO have it together!!  Fitzpatrick gets the most out of his guys!!!  He relates well to his players!!!  MCcarthy, it was his undoing.  Why Fitzpatrick may have an edge?  Murphy hired him at Northwestern before he left there.  He's done pretty well at that school that was a perennial 0-11 team every year prior to his arrival.  I prefer these three because they understand the importance of both offense and defense!!!

While were in the mode of firing coaches, how the hell is Zook still on this staff?  I could see Moss getting fired, linebackers have sucked since Kevin Greene left!!!!!  That's the real weakness on defense, not our DB's.

Carmichael- Heard he's a big analytics guy.  Been there for awhile, and hes more of the guy you want helping to develop game plans than leading the team.  Very good OC, but as a head coach, I'm not so sure.

Lombardi - I wouldn't hire this guy in GB just for the name, way too much pressure.    His grandfather is a NFL legend and even bigger in Green Bay.  I wouldnt touch that legacy with a 10 foot pole.  What if he is a coaching disaster?  Preserve Vince's legacy and just leave it be.

Fitzgerald - Seems to be the flavor of the week.  Not sure the rah rah stuff works so much in the NFL.   You gotta have great coaches around you if you do.  I think he's a excellent college coach,  but whats he going to do for Rodgers?   Feels like a Mike Sherman hire to me, who wasnt bad, but meh.

Lots of potential good candidates out there, and they all have flaws.    We'll see what they do.

Not a Fitz Fan, but the Rah-Rah stuff has worked pretty well to Pete Carroll in SEA.

Having the team "talent" to make it work helps too.

Matt Campbell signs contract extension at Iowa State.

On Sunday, Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard tweeted that Campbell has agreed to a contract extension through 2024.
Pollard added that Iowa State will give Campbell an additional $1 million in compensation for his assistant coaches.

All of the success has made Campbell one of the hottest names in college football. His name popped up in rumors regarding Ohio State and even the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers.

This is one of the names that I know probably didn't excite some Packers fans, but he was a real candidate for the job. One off the short list.

Maybe.....maybe not!

One thing I will add here is that the Packers hired an outside source/firm to gather information to help locate and narrow down the list of candidates. The wheels for the search of HC prospects has been in motion for awhile now, one of the outside sources has been working on this since February. This is why I have always believed that this was MM's last year and he was going to retire after the season. Signing a one year extension only adds to that theory. From the information, Campbell was a coach that Gute had near the top of his list of people to interview. The interest was real. I am not saying who the source of information is on this and if you chose to think I am full of crap and want to tell me that, well I would understand. I would also be skeptical of someone giving information, yet not willing to provide a link.

Do teams typically hire outside firms (headhunters) in searches like this?

Or is this telling of how uneducated Mark Murphy is to “who’s who” in the potential coaching ranks?

I give Gute a pass for now since he’s relatively new to the  role and it is a responsibility that has not been on his plate before.

Here’s and article Acme Packing posted yesterday about the Packer coaching search. The author, Jason Hirschhorn, implies the Packers have decided against hiring a search firm:

https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2018/12/10/18134219/packers-to-review-wide-range-of-head-coaching-candidates-mike-mccarthy-nfl-2018

Interestingly, according to Hirschhorn, the Packers did indeed use the firm in question before hiring Murphy. Glean from that what you will.

As for uncited (Is that a word?) sources and reports: The next month or two are going to be filled with rumors, gossip, and theories galore. So it will be entertaining fiction at the least! As I recall, McCarthy was not a prominent name being tossed around when he was hired, and it seemed like he may not have been the Packer’s first choice.

My guess is the Packers will keep their cards close to the chest, and do their best impersonation of Ted Thompson’s secretive ways with this coach search. If they are interested in any of the college coaches, they may have already sent out some feelers, since I think they can do that now that the regular season is over. But of that I’m not certain either.

In the meantime, as I posted in another thread, hold on to your behind, because it’s going to be a wild off-season ride!

This is entering into an area I should not have gone. This report may be correct, but I was told that they already have a Korn Ferry booklet/report on their desks. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. I just know what I was told and I will say no more.

In no way am I trying to discredit the writer of this story.

Thanks for info and input, both RT and JQ.

The Acme piece states that "Murphy could have realistically consulted with Hughes for the team’s coaching search but apparently doesn’t plan to do so at this time."

I wonder if as RT notes the consulting firm has already done a ton of work, and has pre-filtered a host of candidates.  Perhaps their is no need for them to be active in the process at this time?  Perhaps their work is done, and now it's up to Murphy and Gute.  Or perhaps Murphy and Gute need to take some steps for now, and the consultants will rejoin the process at a latter phase.

Anyway, RT I appreciate your input, thanks for sharing.  You've been a thoughtful and responsible poster here for some time, so my trust/respect level for stuff you share is way higher than some more whacko poster!  :)

One perspective I've developed over years is that inside sources may not always know what the decision-makers are going to do.  (This is more as a baseball Cubs fan, where trade rumors and free agency rumors are a bigger deal than in Green Bay, where major free agency signings are uncommon and significant trades are rarer still....) Contacts within an organization may still have inconsistent or imperfect info.  Not everybody involved in Cubs or Packers management is privy to what Theo Epstein for the Cubs, or Murphy and Gute for the Packers, are really thinking or planning to do.  And even for Theo, Murphy, and Gute, their thoughts and plans may change from day to day.  There are multiple possible directions to consider and to pursue, and preferences between them depends on factors outside your control (what a trade partner, potential free agent, or potential coach expects.)

I appreciate any input and clues that we can get, and anything that you feel is reasonable and appropriate to share, RT!

Since Arians is out of the picture, an intriguing replacement candidate would be Todd Monken.  Ideally, you'd like to keep Philbin as HC for a year or two with Monken as OC if he is not ready, eventually taking over for Philbin.  Just look at Tampa Bay with Ryan Fitzpatrick.  They went from zero to heroes overnight.  The offense will be more than OK.  They just can't ignore the defense and special teams like they have for years.

I find Monken intriguing too.  As you said, he's put up some impressive offensive numbers with Fitzpatrick in Tampa Bay.   Not sure where the Packers are going in their search or how ready Monken is to be a head coach, but its hard to overlook what he's done there.  He had big numbers at USM too(over 40 ppg  IIRC).  Its hard to tell with some of these guys.  Is he the next Mike Holmgren or the next Chip Kelly??  Worth a look IMO.

If they want a new HC with some HC coaching creds, they could look at Ken Whisenhunt. He's currently OC for the Chargers, and calling the plays.

Just sayin
