And God so loved the Green Bay Packers, He reached forth his mighty hand and stamped his initial upon the sides of their helmets!--Lombardi 3-16

BTW, there is a story out that CM 3 really wanted to stay in GB.

He was willing to give the Pack a hometown discount, that is how much he wanted to stay here.

What he didn't say was "how much" that hometown discount would have been.

The Rams are paying him $9.25M over 2 yrs, w/ $5.5M guaranteed ($3.5M in 2019 and $2M in 2020)
For what he offers at this stage, the Rams overpaid IMO.

Exactly. The Rams total commitment to Matthews is less than the Packers paid him last year. So, "hometown discount" sounds nice, but until Matthews proves he'd have played for the same contract as the Rams, or less, it's all talk. But really, it's really a moot point, since the team had decided to move on from him. Just as they did with Daniels, Nelson and even Favre. No one sticks around forever. Before we know it, we'll all be looking at the next QB in GB.

Just read a Pete Dougherty Q&A at JSO, and his educated guess that part of a deal to stay in GB might have included moving to ILB, which is something CM3 said in the past that he would not do again.
So, knowing that component, the whole issue of him being "rebuffed" despite his offer to stay for the hometown discount was because playing ILB was probably a nonstarter.

It was actually serviceable as a middle linebacker. In the last few years he was far better on the inside the he was on the outside.

He's a bigger name than producer.  It was time.
