The OFFICIAL Panthers v Packers Game Day Thread
« on: November 06, 2019, 08:31:14 PM »
This game, which looked to be a relatively easy win before the season began, suddenly looms as a gut check game. A game which will decide how the rest of the season will go for this team. Suddenly, the party is over, and it's time to reassess. A team that was cruising got a bruising, and there is a lot of sturm und drang. So, we'll find out soon enough if last week was 'one of those games', that yearly head scratching game where the team just doesn't come to play for some reason. The Packers need to regroup, refocus and go into the bye week with their heads up, rather than scratching them and asking 'What happened (again)?' The key? Stop McCaffrey. Or limit his touches. How to do that? Have the Packers offense go back to the quick release, spread the ball around offense, rather than the 'Where's Davante?' offense from last week. And the OL needs to stop making stupid mistakes, and stop making those 'Look out!' blocks. And run the ball more. Go back to what worked, make adjustments as the game progresses on both sides of the ball, and get ready for the second half of the season, which is going to be extremely challenging. Especially those last three games of the year, all against division rivals. Another winnable game. This time, let's see if they can actually do what is expected.

I'd go with the Packers needing to play less Dime defense and (especially on early downs) and loading the box more to stop those run plays that got five yards a pop at the Chargers.

The Packers O line, normally so good, looked awful last Sunday. They CAN play very well and they have played well this season - no reason they can't get their mojo back.

Finally, keep feeding passes to the RBs, it worked well without D.Adams in there so it should work even better with him.

PS 'sturm and drang' (storm and stress). I never heard of that before and had to look it up.........

I seriously doubt that last week's Packers team shows up this week. I think Pettine will do the WWBBD (what would Bill Bellichick do) in determining how to set-up the defense. You don't let McCaffrey beat you and force the Panthers to beat you throwing the ball.
Agree with 1265...feed the passes to the RBs and run when able.

Pack are 5 pt. favorites which is kind of surprising given their recent performance.  It's going to be cold more like a December game.  So yes need to run and ball security will be important.  We'll see what adjustments are made after last week's debacle.  Can't even predict an outcome for this game don't have a clue.  Hope they come out more aggressive on D and scrap the bend but don't break mentality.

Does this sound familiar? A team that had a terrific record loses a game just before a bye week, and now does some soul searching. Spoiler alert: it's not just the Packers.

Agree with making CAR one dimensional, but that means GB has to get out to an early lead and force CAR to abandon their game plan.

This also means that, both, the offense and the defense have to be clicking early. Offense needs to score on each of first 3-4 possessions, and the defense needs to force 3-and-outs for CAR's first 2-3 possessions.

Pretty tall order based on what we saw from the offense last week and from what we have seen from the defense ever since the DAL game.

This game will test MLF's ability to will his team into playing how he expects.

On D, Stop McCaffrey at all costs, also gotta keep an eye on Greg Olsen.  Make Allen beat you through the air, but you really need to focus on McCaffrey both running and receiving.

On O, a heavy dose of Jones and Williams running the ball.  Carolina is 26th vs the run.  Rodgers also needs to spread the ball around.  You cant wonder if MVS and Allison are even playing, they need to be involved.  This game is very doable if they come prepared to play.

Evidently CMC was a DNP Wednesday for CAR. He has an "undisclosed" knee issue, but what that means for Sunday is only a guess at the moment.
Might be a big-ado about nothing, but at least bears watching.

The Friday injury report should bring a more definitive picture.

https://dknation.draftkings.com/2019/11/6/20952115/curtis-samuel-injury-christian-mccaffrey-week-10-fantasy-football-panthers

[Christian McCaffrey, who was sidelined with what was listed as a knee injury. CMC regularly gets the Wednesday off, so it’s not something to be concerned about. Samuel is a different question. He sat out last Wednesday and Friday with a shoulder injury, so this is a new injury.]

I think the Panthers not having Addison will be of great benefit for the Packers. Not as much as CMC...but still very beneficial.

The Packers OL needs to come to play.  The Chargers DL tore up the Packers OL last week.  The Panthers lead the NFL in sacks. Going to need the Packers  "A Game" from the OL.

Just to underscore the "Any Given Sunday" cliche' that we hear so offense, consider this.

Week 7: Packers play "bully ball" any whoop up on the Oakland Raiders @ Green Bay (Rodgers puts up MVP type numbers)

Week 9: Packers play like old slugs @ LAC and get embarrassed (Rivers looked like the league MVP, while Rodgers looks like junk)

Week 10: LAC plays @ Oakland and the Raiders beat them (Rivers looked old and less than average)

And God so loved the Green Bay Packers, He reached forth his mighty hand and stamped his initial upon the sides of their helmets!--Lombardi 3-16

So, everyone knows that the key to stopping Carolina is limiting McCaffery. Fine. This includes Carolina. So, what to do? Start out with play action passes, crash McCaffery into the line, throw a quick pass to a TE or other receiver and have them go for YAC. Do this two or three times. Then actually run McCaffery a couple of times. But the second time, have him be part of an end around. Watch the entire Packers defense over-pursue, and get a big gain from a WR going the other way. Keep the Packers defense off balance. On defense for the Packers? Don't overcommit; stay disciplined, especially the DB's have to stick with their assignments rather than crashing the line. Have defenders who can cover Olson and McCaffery when they go out on passing routes.

Our offense cannot afford to come up to the line on long yardage, especially with Carolina's pass rush. The best way to keep McCaffery off the field is to run the damn ball with Jones and Williams. We need to make Carolina's offense one dimensional this afternoon.

Agree, big day for Jones and Williams both running and receiving.  Mix in some playaction, and spread the ball when throwing.
