Get woke, go broke
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:45:06 PM »
NFL sunday night football and monday night football are averaging about 30% fewer viewers than the same week last year.

And of course we already know attendance is down to somewhere between 0% and 20% of last year.

Ya think the owners have noticed? I bet they will when the bids come on for the next set of TV contracts.

The NFL has probably done the best job in professional sports walking the line of wokeness. They don't lay it on very thick but they still tote the line. Although, I don't really watch football anymore just the Packers.

Perhaps their positive ratings, in comparison to others, has more to do with it simply being the most popular sport in America by a large margin. The decline in ratings is due to COVID more than grifting woke culture IMO.

It is a conundrum that more people are at home now, but they're not watching TV. Across the board the entertainment industry is suffering, despite the opportunity for people to indulge more. All streaming services have lost considerable subscriptions and the seemingly unavoidable death of news outlets has become quite obvious. Certainly, the financial strain of COVID is partly to blame, but not enough to come up with numbers like we're seeing.

I am certain woke culture is here to stay. I just wish it wasn't voiced and followed by so many incompetent people often in a combination of bad faith and ignorance.

You may be aware of who Eric and Bret Weinstein are, but I'll drop a short intro. You're more likely to have heard about Bret Weinstein than Eric through the Evergreen State disaster, which he often points to, and college campuses in general, as ground zero for this radicalization of woke culture. Eric Weinstein is the managing director of Thiel Capitol among other things. Both very interesting men with a knack for brilliant ideas.

I'd suggest checking out what else they have to say other than the topic of woke culture, but here's a couple of relevant videos from each of them. Mark, you may want to check out Eric's video on geometric unity. It's way over my head, but it seems pretty cool.

If you added all the time I've spent watching the NFL this season, it wouldn't add up to half a game. I decided if the NFL wasn't responsible enough to figure out what they were sponsoring, they didn't need me watching their product. In explaining it to my son who lives in LA, I realized that outside of Green Bay (which was never on), I hardly ever watched NFL games during the season from the years of 85-98. Once fantasy football started, it became a reason to watch until recently.
I thought the commish was looking for new viewers to replace the ones they knew they would lose going into their new woke positions. Must be they don't care either.
I am curious on how the NFL plans to handle the new lower cap issues and how teams will finagle their player salaries, but right now Covid may still be a major player this season.

True, although it's probably helped that the networks made the (wise) decision to stop showing the anthem.  They've certainly done better than the NBA, you couldn't watch a single play without having Marxism shoved down your throat.  It also didn't help that LeBron James refused to criticize the killing of a police officer.  I don't see myself ever watching the NBA again.

As you note, it also helps that the NFL has a more entertaining product to begin with (IMO).

There are so many streaming services now, many of them free.  If someone decides they want to cut some expenses and simplify their lives, they still have plenty of entertainment options.  The competition is tough out there.

Most likely.  Racism is bad, m'kay?   Politicizing that idea to a highly charged level and tying it to a Defund the Police movement, not to mention the increasing number of citizens who want the US to become a completely Socialist country, causes many people to turn away in disgust.

The real question is whether there is something else that would get better ratings. Even though ratings are down for some games, they're a lot higher for others. The Patriots versus Jets got low ratings. Green Bay versus Houston got very good ratings. As long as advertisers are willing to buy ad time for big bucks, it won't matter. And, as larwain pointed out, there are more ways to watch games than just on TV. I haven't missed a Packers game this year, but I watch on line. It doesn't count in the ratings, but I'm sure I'm not the only one doing this. Besides, if you think there is a lot of guys kneeling this year, google it. Effectively, this is a dead issue.
